CorrelatingCommitteeonBuildingCodeandactedonbytheNFPA

membershipduringthe2023NFPATechnicalMeetingheldJune22.Itwas

issuedbytheStandardsCouncilonAugust25,2023,withaneffectivedateof

September14,2023,andsupe「sedesallpreviouseditions.

onSeptember14,2023.

OriginandDevelopmentofNFPA5000

Theinaugu「al2003editionofNFPA5000®,BuildingConstructionandSafety

Code®,wasissuedin2002andwas(andstillis)thefirstmodelbuildingcode

developedusingthefullopenconsensus-basedproceduresaccreditedbythe

AmericanNationalStandardsInstitute.Thefi「steditionmarkedthe

culminationofNFPA’smorethan100yearsofexperienceindeveloping

volunta「yconsensus-basedcodesandstanda「ds「elatedtothebuilt

envi「onment.FromtheLifeSafetyCode®totheFireCodetotheNational

ElectricalCode®.sp「inkle「installation,fuelgas,andmyriadotheroccupancy-

specificandinstallationstandards,NFPAcodesandstanda「ds,aswellasthe

codesandstandardsofotherconsensus-basedstandardsdevelopment

organizations,haveaddressedalmosteveryaspectofthebuiltenvironment.

Thesignificantgapinthecoderegimeforthebuiltenvironment,however,had

beenthelackofamodelbuildingcodedevelopedusingtheANSIprocedures.
