ThetitleofmybookThreeCupsofTeacomesfromaPakistaniproverbthatsayswhenyousharethefirstcupofteayou’reastranger,withthesecondcupyouareafriend,andwiththethirdcupyoubecomefamily.IpickedthetitleinhonorofHajiAli,thePakistanivillagechiefwhotoldmewewouldneedthreecupsofteaifwewantedtoaccomplishthingstogether.4/65

In1993,afterafailedattempttoclimbK2,Ibecameseparatedfromthegroupaswedescended.Afterwalking58miles,IwanderedintoalittlevillagecalledKorphe.ThereImeetHajiAli,astout,elderlymanwithasilverbeard.Ihadn’ttakenabathin84days,andmypantswereripped.Hesaid,“Welcometoourvillage,butyoudoneedtowashupalittle,son,beforeyoucometomyhousefortea.”5/65
