Thetwomodesforrunninggnuplotareinctiveandfromfile.Ininctivemode,

youcallgnuplotfromthecommandline,typecommands,andwatchoutputappear(see

nextparagraph);inthesecondcaseyoucallgnuplotyourfile.

Theoutputofgnuplotcanbeapictureonyourscreen,ordrawinginstructionsinafile.

Wheretheoutputgoesdependsonthesettingoftheterminal.Bydefault,gnuplotwill

trytodrawapicture.Thisisequivalenttodeclaring

oraqua,windows,oranychoiceofgraphicshardware.

Thebasicplotcommandisplot.Byspecifying

yougetaplotoff(x)=x;gnuplotwilldecideontherangeforx.With

setxrange[0:1]

yougettwographsinoneplot,withthexrangelimitedto[0,1],andtheappropriaegends

forthegraphs.Thevariablexisthedefaultforplottingfunctions.

Plottingonefunctionanother–orequivalently,plottingaparametriccurve–goes
