anupperstageofaspaceflightvehicleinthevacuumofspace.Therearetwo
rocketpropulsionsystems.Theliquidpropellantrocketengineontheupperstage
(onthelowerleft)hasjustliftedthesatelliteintospaceandhasjustbeenshut
down.Thereactioncontrolsystemonthepayloadstagehasfoursmallinclined
thrusters,whichcanbeseenduringtheirfiringoperation;theyaremovingthe
payloadawayfromtheexpendedupperstage.Asmallthruster’splume(flame)
hasabright,ellipticallyshaped,hotgas,verysmallcore,whichisvisible.The
hotexhaustgasesdispersefromthiscoreinalldirections,andthispartofthe
plumeisalmostinvisible.
