1.Introduction
Inrecentyears,theincreasingadvancementandproliferationofautomateddrivinghave
broughtaboutaneedforstandardssuchasISO26262thatdefinesfunctionalsafetyalongwith
functionsthatcontributetothepreventionofaccidentsintheeventofanemergency.Especially
inChina,wheretheleveloftechnicalinnovationisconsiderable,ISO26262hasbeenenacted
asarecommendednationalstandard(withaprefixof‘GB/T’).AChinesetranslationofthe1st
EditionofISO26262waspublishedinOctober2017asGB/T34590,beforegoingintoeffectin
May2018.
Amidthisbackdrop,agrowingnumberofcompaniesarepromotingfunctionalsafetynotonly
amongautomotivemanufacturers(OEMs),butTier1electronicsequipmentsuppliersaswell,
makingitanincreasinglyimportantrequirementworldwide.
Inthispaper,asinterestinfunctionalsafetyandISO26262growsandinitiativesandresponses
areneeded,wewillintroducetheseconceptsfromasemiconductormanufacturer’sperspective,
includinghowtheyaffecttheautomotivesector.
2.WhatisFunctionalSafety?
First,let’sconsiderthemeaningoffunctionalsafety.
2-1.Thedefinitionof‘Safe’
Ifsuddenlyaskedwhatthemeaningof‘safe’is,mostpeoplewouldhaveahardtimeanswering
rightaway.Inthe1steditionoftheinternationalbasicsafetystandardISO/IECGuide51(which
isanintroductoryguidelineonsafety),theword‘safe’isdefinedashaving‘nounacceptable
risk’.Thisdoublenegativemaybedifficulttoimmediatelygrasp,soperhapssaying,‘freedom
fromriskwhichisnottolerable’iseasiertounderstand.However,inanycaseitisnoteasyto
define‘safe’inonesentence,soletsgooverthedefinitionagain.
