Abstract

Background:Concentrationsofoutdoorfineparticulatematter(PM2.5)havebeenassociatedwithcardiovascular

disease.PM2.5chemicalcompositionmayberesponsibleforeffectsofexposuretoPM2.5.

Methods:UsingdatafromtheMulti-EthnicStudyofAtherosclerosis(MESA)collectedin2000–2002on6,256US

adultswithoutclinicalcardiovasculardiseaseinsixU.S.metropolitanareas,weinvestigatedcross-sectional

associationsofestimatedlong-termexposuretototalPM2.5massandPM2.5components(elementalcarbon[EC],

organiccarbon[OC],siliconandsulfur)withmeasuresofsubclinicalatherosclerosis(coronaryarterycalcium[CAC]

andrightcommoncarotidintima-mediathickness[CIMT]).Communitymonitorsdeployedforthisstudyfrom2007

to2008wereusedtoestimateexposuresatbaselineaddressesusingthreecommonly-usedapproaches:(1)nearest

monitor(theprimaryapproach),(2)inverse-distancemonitorweightingand(3)city-wideaverage.

Results:Usingtheexposureestimatebasedonnearestmonitor,insingle-pollutantmodels,increasedOC(effect

estimate[95%CI]perIQR:35.1μm[26.8,43.3]),EC(9.6μm[3.6,15.7]),sulfur(22.7μm[15.0,30.4])andtotalPM2.5
