Andthatsreflectedintheartworkofthattime.

Butartistswerestartingtoexperimentwithamoresecularpointofviewaswell—a

tendencytoalsousethenaturalworldasthesubjectmatterfortheirart.

Andthereweredifferentwaysthatthesenaturalthemeswereexplored.Forinstance,

manyartistswouldpaintportraits,whileothers—althoughthiswasmorecommonin

northernEurope—wouldmakelandscapesthesubjectoftheirworks.

ButtodayIdliketoconsideraninfluentialItalianRenaissanceartist,LeonBattista

Alberti,whotookaslightlydifferentapproach.

LeonBattistaAlbertiwasapainter,sculptor,architect,musician,poet—very

wide-ranginginterests—likedaVinciorMichelangelo,thesortofguyforwhomthe

term“Renaissanceman”wasinfactcreated.

Albertibelievedthatthemostimportantapproachforapainterwastocapturea

storyornarrative.Now,asIveindicated,thisnarrativecouldbeeitherreligiousor

secular,dependingonwhattheworkofartwasfor.Iftheworkwastobeplacedina

churchthenobviouslyitdhaveareligioustheme,whereasifitwasforsomeones

homethenitcoulddealwithadifferentsubjectmatter.Theexactnarrativedidnt

reallymatter,solongasitwasonethatcaptivatedtheaudience—thatheldthe

viewersattention.
