andcompact.Ithasabroadcentralgreensurroundedbythevenerablebuildingsof
DartmouthCollege,anold-fashionedMainStreetandleafyresidentialneighborhoods.
2Itis,inshort,anagreeable,easyplacetogoaboutone’sbusinessonfoot,andyetas
farasIcantell,virtuallynoonedoes.
3Nearlyeveryday,Iwalktothepostofficeorlibraryorbookstore,andsometimes,ifI
amfeelingparticularlydebonair,IstopatRoseyJekesCaféforacappuccino.
Occasionally,intheevenings,mywifeandIstrolluptotheNuggetTheatreforamovieor
toMurphy’sontheGreenforabeer,Iwouldn’tdreamofgoingtoanyoftheseplacesby
car.Peoplehavegottenusedtomyeccentricbehavior,butintheearlydaysacquaintances
wouldoftenpulluptothecurbandaskifIwantedaride.
