Whenwethinkofoursolarsystem,weusuallyassumethatitendsattheoutermostknownplanet,Neptune.“However,severalthousandcelestialbodiesareknowntomovebeyondtheorbitofNeptune,”explainsSusannePfalzner,astrophysicistatForschungszentrumJülich.

Itisevensuspectedthattherearetensofthousandsofobjectswithadiameterofmorethan100kilometers.“Surprisingly,manyoftheseso-calledtrans-Neptunianobjectsmoveoneccentricorbitsthatareinclinedrelativetothecommonorbitalplaneoftheplanetsinthesolarsystem.”

TogetherwithherstudentAmithGovindandSimonPortegiesZwartfromLeidenUniversity,SusannePfalznerhasusedmorethan3,000computersimulationstoinvestigateapossiblecauseoftheunusualorbits:couldanotherstarhavecausedthestrangeorbitsoftrans-Neptunianobjects?

Thethreeastrophysicistsfoundthatadistinctive,closeflybyofanotherstarcanexplaintheinclinedandeccentricorbitsoftheknowntransneptuniancelestialbodies.“Eventheorbitsofverydistantobjectscanbededuced,suchasthatofthedwarfplanetSednaintheoutermostreachesofthesolarsystem,whichwasdiscoveredin2003.Andalsoobjectsthatmoveinorbitsalmostperpendiculartotheplanetaryorbits,”saysSusannePfalzner.

Suchaflybycanevenexplaintheorbitsof2008KV42and2011KT19–thetwocelestialbodiesthatmoveintheoppositedirectiontotheplanets.
