    recountinghislifeandadventures.TheChevalierwasasomewhatcontroversialfigure,but

    sincehemetmanyfamouspeople,includingkingsandwriters,hismemoirhasbecomea

    valuablehistoricalsourceaboutEuropeansocietyintheeighteenthcentury.However,some

    criticshaveraiseddoubtsabouttheaccuracyofthememoir.TheyclaimthattheChevalier

    distortedorinventedmanyeventsinthememoirtomakehislifeseemmoreexcitingand

    glamorousthanitreallywas.

    Forexample,inhismemoirtheChevalierclaimsthatwhilelivinginSwitzerland,hewasvery

    wealthy,anditisknownthathespentagreatdealofmoneythereonpartiesandgambling.

    However,evidencehasrecentlysurfacedthattheChevalierborrowedconsiderablesumsof

    moneyfromaSwissmerchant.CriticsthusarguethatiftheChevalierhadreallybeenvery

    rich,hewouldnothaveneededtoborrowmoney.
