Abstract

Second-personaddressformsaretheaddressformsusedbythespeakertothehearer

incommunication.Deviationalsecond-personaddressforms,differentfromthecommon

second-personaddressforms,refertotheaddressformsusedbythespeakertothehearerin

ordertoachieveacertaincommunicativepurposeortoobtainacertainemotionaleffect.

HongLouMengisoneofthefourclassicalmasterpiecesinChina,inwhichthedialogues

occupyaconsiderableamountofspaceandplaysaveryimportantroleinthenovel.The

deviationalsecond-personaddressformsinthedialoguesinHongLouMengareclosely

relatedtothecommunicativepurposesandspecialemotionsofthespeakers,soitisvaluable

toexploretheirtranslation.However,suchstudieshavenotbeencoveredintheprevious

studies.Thetranslators’styleissomeregularlinguisticfeaturesthattranslatorsshowintheir

translationsofliteraryworks.Thisthesisexaminesthetranslationofdeviationalsecond-

personaddressformsinHongLouMengfromtheperspectiveoftranslators’style.

Thisthesisfirstcollects249deviationalsecond-personaddressformsfromthefirst80

chaptersofthenovel,andthencollectstheEnglishtranslationsfromYangXianyiand

GladysYang(hereafterreferredtoas“Yang’stranslation”)andHawkesandMinford

(hereafterreferredtoas“Hawkes’translation”)tobuildaparallelcorpus.Thethesis

attemptstoanswertwoquestions:(1)Whatarethelinguisticfeaturesofthesetwo

translators’styleintheirtranslationsofthesedeviationalsecond-personaddressforms?(2)

Whatarethepossiblereasonsforthosefeatures?
