ABSTRACT
Thisreportisbasedonasimulatedconsecutiveinterpretationofthespeech
LeadingtheUKintoDigitaldeliveredbyTimDavie,theCEOoftheBBC,atthe
RoyalTelevisionSociety(RTS)intheUnitedKingdom.Thesessionlastedfor63
minutes,includinga31-minutespeechanda32-minuteQAsession.Thereasonsfor
selectingthissessionforsimulationareasfollows:(1)thematerialincludesbotha
formalspeechandaQAsession,providingrichlinguisticcontentforcomprehensive
analysis;(2)Thespeaker’saddressisimbuedwithBritishbackgroundknowledge,
accompaniedbyinstancesofredundancyanddisfluencies.Thisposesachallengefor
theauthor;(3)thespeaker’sspeechrateismoderate,suitableforconsecutive
interpretation.
Thispaperpresentsathoroughanalysisofasimulatedconsecutiveinterpreting
practice,encompassingpre-task,during-task,andpost-taskstages.Theprimaryfocus
ofthisanalysisisontheprevalentissueofdisfluencies,includingpauses,repetitions,
meaninglessfillers,andself-repairs.Inthecontextoftheauthor’sdisfluencies,self-
repairsstandsoutprominently.Accordingtotheself-repairframeworkproposedby
Tang(2020),theauthordividehisself-repairsappearedinthesimulatedinterpretation
practiceintoerrorrepairs,appropriatenessrepairs,explicitationrepairs,synonymy
repairs,andrestartrepairs.Furthermore,thisstudyidentifiestheunderlyingcauses
contributingtotheserepairs.
Theauthorconcludesthatadoptingstrategiestocamouflageself-repairsas
emphasis,enhancinglanguageproficiency,andintensifyinginterpretingexercisesare
essentialmeasurestominimizeoreliminatedisfluenciesininterpreta
