ABSTRACT

Thereportisaboutthetaskentrustedbytheoverseaseducationinstitutionduring

whichtheauthorcompletedtheinterpretingtaskforthedissertationadvisorypanelof

theUniversityofSanCarlosofthePhilippinesfortheirstudents’dissertationdata

verification.Undertheguidanceoffunctionalequivalencetheory,theauthorstudies

thespecificapplicationofdifferentinterpretingstrategiesbasedonthepracticeof

liaisoninterpreting.First,theauthorgivesabriefintroductiontothewholetask,and

thenelaboratesthefunctionalequivalencetheoryindetail.Accordingtothistheory,

translationisthereproductionofthesourcelanguageinformationinthetarget

languagewiththeclosestandmostnaturalequivalence.Inaddition,thetheoryalso

clearlystatesthatthecontentisthemostimportant,followedbytheform.While

ensuringboththeinformationcontentsareequivalent,italsorequiresformal

equivalenceasmuchaspossible.Whenformalequivalenceandcontentequivalence

cannotbeachievedatthesametime,contentequivalenceshouldbegivenpriority.

Aftertheinterpretation,basedonthetheoryoffunctionalequivalence,theauthor

summarizestheproblemsencounteredinlexicalequivalence,syntacticequivalence

andtextualequivalenceintheinterpretingprocess,suchasthenocorresponding

vocabularyinthetargetlanguage,thespeakersdiscursivespeech,redundant

discourse,complexsentencepatterns,andtherelativelyhiddeninformation.Andthe

authorputsforwardsolutions,suchassubstitution,paraphrase,compression,reverse

translationandamplification.Thispaperreviews,analyzesandsummarizesthe

interpretationpracticethroughcaseanalysis.Afterthetask,theauthorreflectsand

summarizestheproblemsoastofindsolutionsandhopefullyitcanprovidereference

forherselfandotherinterpretersintheirfutureliaisoninterpretingtasks.Thisr
