Chapter10FrancisBaconLifeandWorksFrancisBacon(1561–1626)wasbornintoanoblefamilybelongedtothesamegroupofSidney,Raleigh,SpenserandsomeotherpoetsinthereignofElizabethIAttwelveBaconwenttoCambridge,andin1576hebeganreadinglawatGray’sInn.From1577,hewasinFranceinthetrainoftheEnglishambassador.Whenhewastwenty-three,hewaselectedtoParliament.

WhenJamesIcametoEngland,Baconofferedhisservicesandhisadvice,andreceivedaknighthood.Afterafewyearsheobtainedanimportantofficeofstate,andbetween1612and1621herosethroughasuccessionofstagesuntilhebecameLordHighChancellor,theheadofthelegalsystemofEngland,andmadeapeer,withthetitlesofBaronVerulamandViscountStAlbans.Baconwasanadmirablejudge,butinthecourseofhisrisinghehadmadeenemieswhofinallycombinedtobringagainsthimchargesofbriberyandthebetrayalofjustice.AlexanderPopedescribedhimas“thewisest,brightest,meanestofmankind”.diedin1626Chapter10FrancisBaconLifeandWorks

Bacon’sworksmaybedividedintothreeclasses,thephilosophical,theliteraryandtheprofessionalworks.Theprincipalandbest-knownofthephilosophicalworksare:TheAdvancementofLearningpublishedinEnglishin1605,NovumOrganumpublishedinLatinin1620andDeAugmentisScientiarumpublishedinLatinin1623.OfBacon’sliteraryworks,themostimportantisEssays.Tenoftheseessayswerepublishedin1597,andtheywerereissuedandextende
