Chapter20JohnBunyanLifeandWorksJohnBunyan(1628–1688)apoor,uneducatedtinkerwhoinheritednothingfromRenaissance,butfromthereformationreceivedthespiritualindependencewhichhadcausedtheEnglishBourgeoisRevolution,aPuritanstruggleforlibertyBunyanwasborninthelittlevillageofElstownearBedford.Hewasthesonofapoortinker.Hewassenttoschoolforashorttime,wherehelearnedtoreadandwrite,buthewassoonbusyinhisfather’sshop,whereamongtheglowingpotsandthefireandsmokeofthelittleforge,hesawthevividpicturesofhellandthedevilswhichhauntedhimallhislife.

Whenhewassixteen,hisfathermarriedthethirdtime,whereuponBunyanranawayandbecameasoldierintheParliamentaryarmy.ThereligiousfermentoftheagemadeatremendousimpressiononBunyan’ssensitiveimagination.Hewenttochurchoccasionally,onlytofindhimselfwrappedinterrorsandtormentsbysomefierypreachers,andhewouldrushviolentlyawayfromchurchtoforgethisfearsbyjoininginSundaysportsonthevillagegreen.Asnightcamethesportswereforgotten,buttheterrorsreturned,multipliedliketheevilspiritsoftheparable.Visionsofhellandthedemonsfilledhisbrain.Hewouldgroanaloudinhisremorse,andevenyearsafterwardshebemoanedthesinsofhisearlylife.SuchfancyofBunyanwouldlaterappeartoWilliamBlakeinthepre-romanticperiod.Whenhewasstillateenager,Bunyangotmarriedtoagirlaspoorashim.ThisLifeandWorksChap
