Chapter19AndrewMarvellLifeandWorksAndrewMarvell(1621–1678)anEnglishpoet,whosepoliticalreputationovershadowedthatofhispoetryuntilthe20thcenturyHeisnowconsideredtobeoneofthebestmetaphysicalpoets.HewasborninYorkshireandlatermovedtoHullwithhisfamily.HewaseducatedatHullGrammarSchoolandTrinityCollege,Cambridge,takingaBAin1639.Around1650begantotutorMaryFairfax,daughterofSirThomasFairfax,LordGeneralofOliverCromwell’sParliamentaryarmy,andwrotelyricsincluding“TheGarden”.
In1657,MarvellwasappointedassistanttoMiltonwhowasblindthen,andinhisquietway,heseemedtohavebeenresponsibleforsavingMiltonfromimprisonmentandpossibleexecutionaftertheRestoration.In1659,hewaselectedamemberofParliament(MP)forHull,andremainedasanMPforHulluntilhisdeath.HewasdevotedtotheinterestsofHull.LifeandWorksChapter19AndrewMarvell
LikeDonne,Marvellwaslargelyforgottenduringthe18thand19thcenturies.ItwasnotuntiltheFirstWorldWar,withH.J.C.Grierson’sMetaphysicalLyricsPoemsoftheSeventeenthCenturyandT.S.Eliot’s“AndrewMarvell”,thatthemodernhighestimationofhispoetrybegantoprevail.EliotsawthatMarvell’switandmagniloquencejoinedtogetherthetwogreatstrandsofthe17th-centurypoetry.Nowconsideredoneofthegreatestpoetsofthe17thcentury,Marvellpublishedverylittleofhiscatchingpoliticalsatireandcomplexlyricverseinhislifetim
