Chapter3LifeandWorksKenKesey(1935–2001)bornintoafamilyofdairyfarmersinLaJunta,Colorado.In1956,andafterbrieflyconsideringacareerasanactor,hedecidedtoenrollinthenon-degreecreativewritingprogramatStanfordUniversity.WhileattendingStanford,Keseybeganthemanuscriptthatwouldbecomehisbestknownnovel,OneFlewOvertheCuckoo’sNest.TheinspirationofthenovelcameoutofhisworkingonthenightshiftattheMenloParkVeterans’Hospital,whereKeseyoftentalkedtothepatients,sometimesundertheinfluenceofthehallucinogenicdrugsChapter31KenKesey

Chapter3LifeandWorkswithwhichhehadvolunteeredtoexperiment.OneFlewOvertheCuckoo’sNestwaspublishedin1962andwasanimmediatesuccess.In1964,KeseypublishedhissecondnovelSometimesaGreatNotion,whichfocusedonquestionsofindividualityandconformity.InthenonfictionKesey’sGarageSale(1973),DemonBox(1986),andTheFurtherInquiry(1990),KeseywroteofhistravelswiththeMerryPranksters,agroupthattraveledtogetherinabusduringthe1960s.In1992hepublishedSailorSong,inwhichheexaminedenvironmentalcrisesandtheendoftheworld.Twoyearslater,withthecollaborationofKenBabbs,hepublishedwhatwouldbehislastnovel,theWestern-themedLastGoRoun
