ABSTRACT

Inrecentyears,Chinahaspromotedtheadvantagesofmediationasanalternative

disputeresolutionmechanismtoachieveeffectivedisputeresolution.Efficient

identificationofissuesisacrucialstep.Toexploretheeffectivewaysofissue

identification,thisstudyattemptstoanalyzehowthehostasfactinvestigator

(hereafterreferredtoasHFI)identifiesissuesthroughinformationdigginginGold

MedalMediation(hereafterreferredtoasGMM)fromtheperspectiveofdiscourse

information.Morespecifically,threeresearchquestionsareaddressed:1)Whatare

thefeaturesofinformationdigginginissueidentification?2)Whatarethewaysof

informationdigginginissueidentification?3)Whataretheeffectsofinformation

digginginissueidentification?BycenteringontheDiscourseInformationTheory

(DIT)andincorporatingtheSchemaTheory,wedevelopananalyticalframeworkfor

thequalitativeanalysisof15episodesofGMM.

Dataanalysisshowsthat(1)Forissueidentification,HFIutilizesthreecategoriesof

discourseinformation:factual,attitudinal,andprocedural.TheHFI’sin-depthdigging

offactualandattitudinalinformationtransformstheoriginallyunknowninformation

intoknown,deepeningtheHFI’soverallinsightintodisputesandfacilitatingtheissue

identification.(2)Summarizing,questioning,andregulatinginformationflowarethe

primarywaystheHFIemploystodigupunknowninformation.Summarizingfocuses

theinformationdiggingontheissue-relatedinformation.Twoapproachesto

achievingsummarizationarereducinglower-levelinformationunitsandadding

o(situation)andb(asis)informationelements.Questioningisthemostdirectwayto

digupinformation.Regardingtheopennessofquestions,theHFIemploys5typesof

open-endedquestioninformationand4typesofclosed-endedquestioninformation.

Regardingthedependenceofquestions,HFIusesbothquestionscomposedofasingle

informationalunitandmultipleinformationunits.Fromamacrodiscourseperspective,
