attendtheseclubsisthattheirparentsorcarergoestoworkearly,citedby76.8%ofthosequestioned.

About22.6%saidchildrenattendedduetolackofmoneyathomebecauseparentsorcarersare

unemployedand15.2%saidlackofmoneyathomeduetochangesorcutstobenefits.About17.6%

saidpupilsmainlyattendbreakfastclubstosocialize.

Thesurveyfoundthatteachersbelievethatofferingbreakfasttopupilsoftenhelpsimprovetheir

concentrationandabilitytolearn.Oneprimaryschoolteachersaid:“Althoughthereisachargefor

ourbreakfastclub,wehaveaccessedfundingforthosepupilsonfreeschoolmealsandthebreakfast

clubhadaneffectontheirattendance,concentrationandbeinginschoolforthestartoflessons.

ATLgeneralsecretaryDrRopersaidanutritiousmealatthestartofthedayhasahugeimpact

onpupils’abilitytolearn.“Manyschoolsdoeverythingtheycantoensurechildreneatwellduring

schoolterm-time.Buttherearemanychildrenlivinginpoverty,whowefearwon’tbegettinga

decentmealadayintheholidaysandthisissomethingthegovernmentneedstoaddress,”shesaid.

ADepartmentforEducationspokesmansaid:“Weknowhowimportantitisforchildrento

haveagoodbreakfast.Wewantschoolsandlocalauthoritiestousetheirbudgetstobestmeetthe

needsoftheirchildren.Manyprovidebreakfastclubswhichofferafreemealtochildrenfrompoorer
