SherlockHolmeswasintroducedinAStudyinScarlet(1887),followedby

ASignofFourin1890,butdidntreallytakeholdofthlics

imaginationuntilStrandmagazine,newlyfoundedin1890,publisheda

seriesofshortstoriescalledTheAdventuresofSherlockHolmes.From

thatpointonthliccouldntgetenoughofHolmesandhisalways

reliableconfidant,JohnH.Watson,aretiredmilitarydoctor.
