Whileotherteenagersmightbebusytakingcareoftheirpersonalpagesonlineorplayinggamesforhours,14-year-oldJacksonOswaltfromMemphishasbeenbusydoingsomethingdifferent.Hehasspenthisfreetimebuildinghisownnuclearreactor(核反应堆)inhishome.Now,theboyispraisedbycityleadersforhisachievementasheistheyoungestpersontohaveachievednuclearfusion(核聚变).

Atjust12yearsold,Jacksonchosetospendhistimeexploringhisinterestinnuclearphysics.AfterscouringtheInternet,thestudentlearnedofthestoryofTaylorWilson,anArkansasboywhowonrecognitioninthefieldofscienceastheyoungestpersontoachievenuclearfusionin2008attheageof14.Jacksonwasgreatlyinspiredbyhim.

Theprocessofthenuclearexperimentisnoteasyatall.ButJacksonthoughtifWilsoncoulddoit,thenhecould,too.MaybehecouldevenbreakWilson’srecordintheprocess.Theboystartedhisprojectbyturninghisplayroomintoalaboratory.Thenheboughtdifferentkindsofthingstobuildownnuclearfusionreactor.

“Thebeginningofthescientificresearchwasjustlearningaboutwhatotherpeoplehaddonewiththeirfusionreactors,”Jacksonsaid.Hisparentsspentnearly$8,000to$10,000supportinghisnuclearexperiment.“Withthemoney,IsearchedforandboughtthepartsthatIneeded.OftenthepartsIfoundwerenotexactlywhatIwanted,soIhadtomakeimprovementstothem.”
