Somepeoplehaveamazingmemories.AccordingtotheGuinnessBookofWorldRecords,GertMittringofGermanycanlookatalistof22numbersforjustfoursecondsandrememberallofthem.Mostpeople,though,havetroublejustrememberingwheretheyputtheircarkeys,orrecallingthenamesofpeoplethey’verecentlymetforthefirsttime.

Theprocessbywhichwestoreandrecallinformationinourbrainshasbeenthefocusofscientificresearchformanyyears.Thebrainisnotfullyunderstood,andtheoriesabouthowitworksremainatopicofdebate.Oneareaofthebrainknownasthehippocampusisimportantintheprocessofrecallinginformation.Whenweexperiencesomething,theinformationiscarriedbyoursensestothehippocampus,whereitisprocessed.

Althoughtheprocessofcreatingmemoriesisonlypartlyunderstood,itprobablyinvolvesthreemainsteps.Scientistsbelievethatthebraincellscalledneuronsfirstchangethesensorystimuli(感觉刺激)weexperienceintoimagesinourimmediatememory.Then,theseimagesaresenttothehippocampusandstoredforatimeinshort-termmemory.Inthehippocampus,informationisorganised,anditisduringthisprocessthatpartsoftheimageofourexperiencedisappear.Finally,certaininformationthenbecomesthelong-termmemoryinthepartofthebrainknownasthecerebralcortex,whichmayhappenwhilewearesleeping.

Althoughmemoryfunctionisdifficulttounderstand,memorylossissomethingthatmanypeopleexperienceandworryaboutastheyage.Inthepast,neuroscientistsbelievedthatage-relatedmemoryproblemswererelatedtototalnumberofbraincells.Thethoughtwasthatthebraincontainedalimitednumberofirreplaceableneurons,andaswegotolder,weusedupavailablecells.Butrecentresearchsuggestsnewbraincellsmaybemadethroughoutalifetime.Also,nowthereisevidencethatdamagetothe
