    AtthebeginningofJune2002,BRPMNorthshafthadonly5monthsorereservesavailable.This

    wasduemainlytosinkingofthedeclineshaftbeingbehindscheduleandhighorhigherthan

    plannedgeologicallossesbeingencounteredontheupperlevelsoftheshaft.Inordertomeetthe

    requiredbuild-upoforereserves,itbecameimperativetoincreasetherateandqualityofwaste

    tunneldevelopmentonstrikeonalltheactivelevelsofthemine.Todothisbytheintroductionof

    tracklessmechanisedboomrigswasnotfeasibleduetothehighcapitaloutlaythiswouldentail,

    togetherwiththeneedtorecruitandtrainskilledoperatorsandmaintenancestaff.

    ByJuly2004BRPMNorthshafthadincreasedorereservesto15monthsduemainlytothe

    successfulimplementationofarailboundtunnelingdrillrig,designedtoprovideaccurateandsafe
