I.INTRODUCTION
Althoughtheapplicationofadhesivesintheelectronicsindustryiswidespread,thepro-
ductionofprintedcircuitboards(PCBs)createsademandforawidespectrumofproper-
ties.Technicalprogressbyresearchanddevelopmentleadstomoreminiaturizationof
componentsandcircuits,toahigherlevelofintegrationofprintedcircuits,andthereforeto
higherelectricalpowerevolvedpersquareunit.Thistrendcontinues.Alotofproblems
arisingfromthisdevelopmentcouldbesolvedbyusingspecialadhesives,sealants,or
laminatingresinsonly.
Theaimofthisshortoverviewistodefinetherequirementsoftheelectronicsindustry
foradhesives,toderivetheirprofileofproperties,andtodescribethestateoftheart.
Additionally,encapsulatingandsealingmaterialsaswellasbindersforlaminatesaretreated
ifthereareanalogousrequirementsregardingtheirproperties.Onewell-knownexampleof
thissituationisFR4-basedmaterialforPCBs,wheretheepoxyresinactssimultaneouslyas
anadhesiveforthecopperfoilandasabinderforthelaminate.Theprimaryfieldsfor
applicationofadhesivesintheproductionofelectroniccircuitsareadhesivesforsurface-
mounteddevices(SMDs),bindersforlaminatesand/oradhesivesforPCBbasematerial,
encapsulatingandsealingmaterialsforseparateelectroniccom-ponentsorcomplete
circuits,andadhesivetapesused,forexample,forflexiblekeyboards,feedingtapes,and
coveringmaterials.Avarietyofproductsarecommerciallyavailableforallthese
applications.
