3.1GeneralComments

Thereareseveralinstancesingeomechanicsinwhichitisdesirabletorepresentnesonwhich

slidingorseparationcanoccur—forexample:

1.joint,faultorbeddingnesinageologic;

2.aninterfaceweenafoundationandthesoil;

3.acontactneweenabinorchuteandthematerialthatitcontains;

4.acontactweentwocollidingobjects;and

5.anar“barrier”inspace,whichrepresentsafixed,non-deformableboundary

atanarbitrarypositionandorientation.

FLAC3DprovidesinterfacesthatarecharacterizedbyCoulombslidingand/ortensileandshear

bonding.Interfaceshavethepropertiesoffriction,cohesion,dilation,normalandshearstiffnesses,

tensileandshearbondstrength.Althoughthereisnorestrictiononthenumberofinterfacesorthe

complexityoftheirintersections,itisgenerallynotreasonabletomodelmorethanafewsimple

interfaceswithFLAC3D,becauseitisawkwardtospecifycomplicatedinterfacegeometry.The

program3DEC(Itasca2003)isspecificallydesignedtomodelmanyinteractingbodiesinthree

dimensions;itshouldbeusedinsteadofFLAC3Dforthemorecomplicatedinterfaceproblems.

Interfacesmayalsobeusedtojoinregionsthathavedifferentzonesizes.Ingeneral,theATTACH

commandshouldbeusedtojoingridstogether.However,insomecircumstancesitmaybemore
