RobertBurnswasbornatAlloway,nearAyr,onJanuary25,1759.Hisfather
WilliamwasagardenertotheProvostofAyr.RobertwaseducatedbrieflyatJohn
MurdochsschoolinAllowayandlaterinAyr.
FamilyfinancialworriesforcedBurnstoworkasafarmlabourer,anditwaswhile
thusoccupiedthathemethisfirstlove,NellyKirkpatrick.Sheinspiredhimtotryhis
handatpoetry,asongentitledO,onceIlovdabonnielass,settothetuneofa
traditionalreel.
Burnsworkedatasuccessionoflabouringjobs,includingflaxdressing,andbegan
writingpoetryregularly.Whenhisfatherdiedin1784,BurnsandhisbrotherGilbert
rentedafarmnearMauchline.
Burnsspreadhisaffectionsfreely,andthenextdecadesaw8illegitimatechildren
borntohimthrough5differentwomen.Oneofthese,JeanArmour,becameMrs.Burns
in1788.
ThefirstpublishedworkofpoetrybyRobertBurnswasPoems,Chieflyinthe
ScottishDialectwhichsawthelightofdayon31July1786.Thiscollectionofverse
containedmanyofBurnsbestworks,includingToaMouse,andTheHolyFair.
ThesuccessofPoems,ChieflyintheScottishDialectconvincedBurnsto
abandonnstoemigratetoJamaica.Buoyedbyhisburgeoningreputationasan
unschooledploughmanpoet,BurnsmovedtoEdinburghandbecamepartofthe
thrivingculturalscenethere.
Hewasunabletofindapatrontosupporthiswriting,butpublisherJamesJohnson
gavehimworkeditingacollectionofScottishfolksongs.Thiswork,titledTheScots
MusicalMuseum,waspublishedin5volumesoversixteenyears.Burnshimself
contributedover150songs,includingAuldLangSyne,areworkingofanearlierfolk
songofunknownorigin.
