TheUnitedKingdomofGreatBritainandNorthernIreland,orUKliesbetweentheNorthAtlanticOcean(大西洋)andtheNorthSea,andcomeswithin35km(22miles)ofthenorthwestcoastofFrance,fromwhichitisseparatedbytheEnglishChannel(英吉利海峡).ItcomprisestheislandofGreatBritain(England,ScotlandandWales)andthenortheasternone-sixthoftheislandofIreland(NorthernIreland),togetherwithmanysmallerislands.TheUnitedKingdomhasatotalareaofapproximately245,000km.TheUnitedKingdomisaconstitutionalmonarchywithaparliamentarydemocracyanditscapitalcityisLondon.GreatBritain,thedominantindustrialandmaritimepowerofthe19thcentury,playedaleadingroleindevelopingparliamentarydemocracy(议会民主制)andinadvancingliteratureandscience.Atitszenith(顶峰),theBritishEmpireStretchedoverone-fourthoftheearth’ssurface.
