II.FirstImmigrants
ThefirstimmigrantstoAmericacamealmostfromwestern
Europe.Duringthefirstdecadesofthe17thcentury,settlersfrom
EnglandcolonizedVirginiaandNewEngland.Immigrationto
NewEnglandbeganin1620whenEnglishPuritansestablished
PlymouthColonyinpresent-dayMassachusetts.Thevaluesof
thesePuritansettlersstronglyinfluencedthecultureofthe
AmericancoloniesandlateroftheUnitedStates.
BeforeReadingTheGreatDepression
TheGreatDepressionisconsideredthemostsevere
economiccrisisintheindustrializedworld.Itbeganwhen
AmericanstockmarketfellonFriday,Oct.24,1929,and
continuedthefollowingTuesday,knownasBlackTuesday,witha
greaterfall.TheDepressionstruckmanyothercountriesaswell,
particularlyGermany,Japan,andBritain.Intheearly1930s
millionsofpeoplelosttheirjobs,andmillionsofbusinessesand
banksfailed.PresidentFranklinD.Roosevelt’sNewDealpolicies
improvedthes
