Birds,NotMosquitoes(BNM)isacollectionofdifferentgroupsworkingtoprotectHawaiisnativebirds.Thebiggestconcernsforthesebirdsisavianmalaria,whichisspreadbymosquitoes.NowBNMhasstartedusingdronestodropcontainersofspeciallytreatedmalemosquitoes,hopingtolowerthenumbersofmosquitoesthreateningthebirds.

Hawaiiishometomanyuniquebirds,includingagroupknownashoneycreepers.Thereusedtobeover50differentspeciesofhoneycreepers.Now,only17speciesareleft-andtheseareatgreatrisk.Thereareonlyafewindividualbirdsofthe‘akikikileftinthewild—andfewerthan100ofthe‘akeke’e.

Thereareseveralthreatstothesebirds.Butthebiggestoneisadiseasecalledavianmalaria.Avianmalariaissimilartothemalariathathumansget,butitonlyaffectsbirds.Thediseaseisspreadbymosquitoes.

Beforethe1800s,therewerenomosquitoesinHawaii.Butoncetheyarrived,birdshadnoprotectionfromtheirbites.SomebirdsmovedhigherintoHawaiismountains,whereitwastoocoolformosquitoes.Butastheclimatehaswarmed,theinsectsareevenreachingthese

areas.

In2016,BNM,alongwiththeAmericanBirdConservancyandotherpartners,beganaprogramtolowerthenumbersofmosquitoes-byreleasingmoremosquitoes.

Thatmaysoundlikeabadplan,butthereareacoupleoftricksinvolved.Firstoff,theyareonlyreleasingmalemosquitoes,whichdontbite.Secondly,themosquitoestheyarelettinggohavebeenspeciallytreatedsothattheycarryabacteriacalledWolbachia.
