1.1Thispracticeisforcomputedtomography(CT),which

maybeusedtonondestructivelydisclosephysicalfeaturesor

anomalieswithinatestobjectbyprovidingradiologicaldensity

andgeometricmeasurements.Thispracticeimplicitlyassumes

theuseofpenetratingradiation,speci?callyX-rayandg-ray.

1.2CTsystemsutilizeasetoftransmissionmeasurements

madealongpathsthroughthetestobjectfrommanydifferent

directions.Eachofthetransmissionmeasurementsisdigitized

andstoredinacomputer,wheretheyaresubsequentlyrecon-

structedbyoneofavarietyoftechniques.AtreatmentofCT

principlesisgiveninGuideE1441.

1.3CTisbroadlyapplicabletoanymaterialortestobject

throughwhichabeamofpenetratingradiationpasses.The

principaladvantageofCTisthatitprovidesdensitometric(that

is,radiologicaldensityandgeometry)imagesofthincross

sectionsthroughanobjectwithoutthestructuralsuperposition

inprojectionradiography.

1.4ThispracticedescribesproceduresforperformingCT

examinations.ThispracticeistoaddressthegeneraluseofCT

technologyandtherebyfacilitateitsuse.

1.5Thisstandarddoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthe

safetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itisthe

responsibilityoftheuserofthisstandardtoestablishappro-

priatesafetyandhealthpracticesanddeterminetheapplica-
