DeterminationofAbrasionResistanceofImagesProducedfromCopiersandPrinters(TaberMethod)1
ThisstandardisissuedunderthefixeddesignationF1478;thenumberimmediatelyfollowingthedesignationindicatestheyearoforiginaladoptionor,inthecaseofrevision,theyearoflastrevision.Anumberinparenthesesindicatestheyearoflastreapproval.Asuperscriptepsilon(e)indicatesaneditorialchangesincethelastrevisionorreapproval.
Scope
Thistestmethodcoversaprocedurefordeterminingtheamountofimageabradedfromthesurfaceofadocument.
Thistestmethodmaybeusedtoevaluatetheabrasionresistanceofimagesproducedbybusinessimagingproducts,includingnonimpactprinters,thermaltransferprinters,andcopiers.Themachineshallbecapableofproducingthespecifiedimage.
Testingfocusesondeterminingtheamountofimagedmaterialremoved,resultingfromforceswhichimpartarub-bingorgrindingactionprincipallyonthetopsurfaceoftheimage.
Comparisonmaybemadebetweenvariousimagingdevicesortheimage-producingcomponentsofanindividualmachine.
OthertestmethodsemployingtheCrockmeter(TestMethodF1319),SutherlandRubTester,andGavartiGA-CATmaybeemployedtoevaluatethesmudgeandabrasioncharacteristics.Resultsbythesetestmethodsarenotnecessar-ilyequivalenttothoseobtainedbythistestmethod.
Thisstandarddoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthesafetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itistheresponsibilityoftheuserofthisstandardtoestablishappro-priatesafetyandhealthpracticesanddeterminetheapplica-bilityofregulatorylimitationspriortouse.
