ThisstandardisissuedunderthefixeddesignationF1470;thenumberimmediatelyfollowingthedesignationindicatestheyearoforiginaladoptionor,inthecaseofrevision,theyearoflastrevision.Anumberinparenthesesindicatestheyearoflastreapproval.Asuperscriptepsilon(e)indicatesaneditorialchangesincethelastrevisionorreapproval.

Thepreventionsystemusesadvancedqualityplanninginadditiontomanyofthetechniquesusedinthedetectionsystem.Qualityplanningincorporatesasystemsapproachtoqualitycontrolthatfocusesondefectpreventionandcontinualimprovement.Inaddition,StatisticalProcessControl(SPC)isusuallyappliedtocontroltheprocess,therebyreducingthevariabilityoftheoutput.
