She won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1993. As one of the most celebrated writers of our time, Toni Morrison has become a distinctive literary voice in the 20th Century, and her works has become the essential reading in the body of contemporary American fiction.?“She was appointed Robert F. Goheen Professor in the Council of the Humanities at Princeton University in the spring of 1989.”1 Morrison’s strong national feeling came from her experience and thought. She was born in Chloe Anthony Wofford in Lorain, Ohio, where her parents had moved to escape from the southern racism. Morrison grew up in the black community of Lorain. She spent her childhood in the Midwest and read voraciously from Jane Austen to Tolstoy. Morrison’s father, George Wofford, was a welder, and told her folktales of the black community, transferring his African-American heritage to next generation.2 Various unfair things which were seen by her in black area in her childhood influenced her thought deeply and aroused her interest in black culture. As an Afro-American, Toni Morrison always creates her works using traditional African folk culture like other black writers. She knits folktale, myth, cultural faith into different stories and mixes African folk customs into her novel. By way of this, she displays black group’s life to us. We can find this creation sense in most of her works. It reflects that she cares black culture constantly which is repelled by the white culture for a long time. She, with the help of African folktale, displays the theme of returning to black culture in Song of Solomon.
