Each person in society has his name which differs him from other members and which usually accompanies him for the whole of his lifetime. With this function, names play a significant role in people’s social interactions, political involvement, as well as in economical life.Meanwhile, names are also a carrier of culture. In naming the newborns, people are inevitably influenced by their cultural surroundings. They put in names their expectation of or best wishes for the newborn, which manifests their value and aesthetical taste. The ordering of family name and given name, the time of appearance of the two in history, the choice or avoidance of certain names, and even the change of female names after marriage truthfully reveals a nation’s psychology and reflects its social reality. From this point of view, names are not only linguistic symbols but also social symbols. Like other linguistic phenomena, they play the role of carrier and propagator of cultures. The information of a nation’s value, historical reality, language, psychology, and religion are all implicated in them.Factors concerning names between different cultures may be similar or different. The similarity shows generality of cultures while the difference is a reflection of cultural variety. By studying and comparing names of different nations, one can see through the surface and get to know the similar and different cultures lying under them. And this approach works well in the comparative study of Chinese and Western cultures.?II.
