Introduction Thomas Lanier Williams, widely known as Tennessee Williams, has long been one of the fascinating figures of American drama. Among all his woks, Williams is mostly remembered and celebrated for the plays The Glass Menagerie?(1944), A Streetcar Named Desire?(1947), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof?(1955), and The Night of the Iguana?(1961). The Glass Menagerie?(1944), which is heavily autobiographical, won the New York Critics’ Circle Award as the best play of the 1944-1945 Broadway seasons. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof?(1955), another Pulitzer Prize-winning play, is an amalgam of the Williamsian themes. Williams’ last major hit is The Night of the Iguana?(1961), about a disparate group of travelers working through problems in a run-down tourist spot in Mexico.?? It is the production of The Glass Menagerie that suddenly lifts Tennessee Williams from poverty and obscurity to affluence and fame. This play ran for an unprecedented 855 performances, and was the first play ever to win all three major awards, the Pulitzer Prize, the New York Drama Critic’s Circle Award, and the Donaldson Award. The 1996 thirty-two-cent United States postage stamp, issued in commemoration of Tennessee Williams, features a portrait of Williams in a white linen suit against a twilight sky and, in the background, a streetcar. The choice of the streetcar as the only element in the design that can be specifically tied to one of Williams’ plays testifies the centrality of A Streetcar Named Desire in his dramatic canon as well as in the American cultural consciousness. ? In the play A Streetcar Named Desire, Williams depicts a despairing world for the heroine,Blanche
