Introduction to the Author Henry James?(1843–1916), a native of New York, had been born into a world of ideas and letters. In 1855, when James was twelve, his family embarked on a three-year tour of Europe that included London, Paris, and Geneva. The experience had a profound influence on James’s life and writing. In addition to European art and culture, the trip made him be familiar with European society. It also put him in an ideal position to observe the contrasts between New and Old World values, a conflict that was to appear repeatedly in James’s fiction as?“the international theme.” Henry James, as a writer, mainly concerns with the social and moral differences between the New World and Europe?(mainly represented by England, Italy and France). That is the?“international theme”.? Daisy Miller was a great success, making James an author of international standing. It was mainly about a na?ve, self-confident and rather vulgar American girl trying to get into the European high society. Thus, the conflicts between two cultures gradually appear.??? B. Introduction to the Novel “Daisy Miller” is one of James’ first works ever to get international fame. This novel is mainly about the love between winterbourne and Daisy. Daisy Miller is a pretty American girl who travels around Europe with her mother and young brother. Winterbourne who has lived in Geneva most of his life, is attracted by Daisy. To Winterbourne, Daisy is less proper than the European girls because she is?“uncultivated”.
