A Brief Introduction to Jane Austen’s Life and Work Jane Austen, an English writer, who first gave the novel its modern character through the treatment of everyday life. She was born in Steventon, Hampshire. Her parents were avid readers and she received a broader education than many women of her time. In 1809, Austen moved to Chawton and started to write her major works. Nowadays her novels and the viewpoint on marriage still have a great impact on people from all over the world. Her most famous novel Pride and Prejudice.It describes the clash between Elizabeth Bennet, the daughter of a country gentlemen, and Fitzwilliam Darcy, a rich aristocratic landowner. Their relationship starts from dislike but at last they fall in live and are happily united.? Austen never married, but her social life was active. She was connected with the middling rich landed gentry that she portrayed in her novels. In Austen’s all novels, her heroines? ultimately get married. Hence, we can see Austen’s marital view on marriage from her novels, especially from Pride and Prejudice. She declaims that an ideal marriage should consist of love and money, but love is still the most important part in a marriage. B. The Status of Women between the Late 18th Century and the Early 19th Century?? 1. Women’s Education In Jane Austen’s time, there was no centrally organized system of state-supported education. There were local charities or church-run day schools. The children of the?“genteel” social levels did not attend. Instead,?“genteel” children might be educated at home by their parents, or by tutors. And they could go a private boarding school. Some local?“Grammar” schools existed, teaching the educational basics to higher-class or upwardly mobile boys, but did not admit girls.
