An Introduction to the Author and the NovelThe Catcher in the Rye is generally acknowledged as a modern classic. It is very popular with modern teenagers. J.D. Salinger is the author of The Catcher in the Rye. He was born in the New York City in 1919. The son of a wealthy cheese importer, Salinger grew up in a happy family in Manhattan. He graduated from Valley Forge in 1936 and attended a number of colleges, including Columbia University, but did not graduate from any of them. However, at Columbia, Salinger took a creative writing class in which he excelled, cementing his interest in writing that he had maintained since his teenage years. Salinger had his first short story published in 1940. He continued to write even as he joined the army and fought in Europe during World War II. Upon his return to the United States and civilian life in 1946, Salinger continued to write stories, publishing them in many of the more respected magazines. In 1951, Salinger’s famous novel The Catcher in the Rye was published. After the publishing of the novel, Salinger became more and more famous. In 1953, he met Claire Douglas, and after a fairly stormy romance, married her in 1955. They have two children, Mathew and Peggy. Since his marriage, Salinger has not published anything in either magazines or books. It is said that he is still writing, but he writes just for himself and his own pleasure. His life reminds a mystery till today.Read and cherished by generations, The Catcher in the Rye is truly one of America’s literary treasures.
