Therefore, it is useful to examine the functions of nonverbal messages in relation to verbal messages in communication.Do you sometimes wave your hand to show good-bye to somebody? How do you greet a guest when he introduces himself to you at a formal occasion? How do you let the speaker know that you are listening to him carefully in class? How do other people know that you are happy? In some cases you can successfully communicate by using your hand, your eyes or by putting on a smile. Have you ever wondered why sometimes you take an almost immediate liking to a person you have just met? Be worried about why someone you were talking to became cold and distant suddenly? The reason was that it wasn’t anything that you meant, while at the same time something happened, a gesture, a movement or a smile.
