It is the specific symbol that people use to distinguish themselves from the others.”1 It is also the historical product of social development. In several millenniums years of human history of civilization, people have learned how to use names to identify different persons when they communicated with other people. As a social phenomenon,?“people’s name is a miniature of the national culture.”2 Culture is a concept that can be defined in different ways. Generally, culture has been interpreted in two senses, a broad sense and a narrow one.?“In its broad sense culture is the attributes of human. Culture in this sense may include at least the following components: materials, social institutions and organizations, knowledge, language, customs, and so on. And culture in its narrow sense can be defined as the life way of a population.”3 People’s name is a language phenomenon, and language is an important part of culture. Therefore, people’s name has close relation with culture.? To be exact, different names reflect different culture because?“people’s name is the carrier of its respective culture.”4 In short, on one hand, culture influences people’s name, on the other hand, people’s name reflects the culture. This paper starts with the relationship between people’s name and culture, and then through the explanation of the characteristics and origins of English name and Chinese name, it aims to tell us there are great influences of cultural connotation in names, and ends up with the comparison between English name and Chinese names. All in all, as an English learner, if we have a good understanding about English names and their cultural connotations, it will be great helpful for us to understand such usages, so we should comprehend English-name culture, which is helpful for us to understand the western cultural
