Advertisement has become an essential part of modem life and is used as a powerful weapon in business nowadays. Along with the rapid development of social economy, advertising is becoming increasingly popular. Advertising appears on many different media including newspapers, magazines, television, radio, posters and Internet, etc. In order to secure a number of readers and to compete with many other similar advertising messages, advertisers try to make their advertisements as effective as possible. They use various linguistic devices to catch attention, arouse desire, induce action, and contribute towards satisfaction.?As a kind of English for specific purpose, English for advertising differs from English for general purpose, which finds expression in the use of words, the structure of sentences and the device of rhetoric. This thesis analyzes the characteristics of advertising Eng1ish from the aspects of lexicon, syntax and rhetorical devices based on many real examples of advertisement.A. Definition of AdvertisingToday, with the development of the technology and the diversity of the mass media, advertising has influenced us pervasively in our daily life. However, whatever the promotive strategies advertising takes, language is the main carrier of message all along, as The Language of Advertising, by Vestergaard?
