It is a summary of people’s daily life experience. It is a high concentration and expression of the English proverbs. It is the essence of English people’s wisdom, after a long accumulation, it forms a concise conformation. The languange of English proverbs is short, concise and pithy and often express some philosophical opinions. The English proverbs can reflect the background of a country’s geography, history and religion and so on. A well-translated English proverb can not only teach, enlighten and persuade people, but also can enrich our Chinese language and culture. So it is necessary to study a nation’s proverbs when we try to study its language and culture．English proverbs have many characteristics, such as oral and concise form, deep thought and moral, bold image, unique geographical and ethnic characteristics. Because of these characteristics, it is difficulit for us to translate English proverbs correctly, if we want to keep the original form and taste of English proverbs’ language.?Moreover, because of the differences of religious beliefs，habits and customs，fables and myth，and culture and art，English proverbs and Chinese proverbs carry on the different national cultural characteristics and information. If we do not know these cultural backgrounds, we can not understand the English proverb’s connotation and can not translate them precisely. To our Chinese, people know a little cultural knowledge about English, it is very difficult for us to understand and translate English proverbs. So when studying English and translate English proverbs, we should try to study its culture firstly.It is well known that English proverbs have a long history and have rich cultural connotation, if people want to translate English proverbs in a right way, they should not only have
