                                        2. Yawata Works, Nippon Steel Corporation)
Abstract One of our key tasks in Tobata No. 3 Sinter Plant in Yawata Works, Nippon Steel Corp., is to reduce the
consumption of expensive burnt lime, which is abundantly used to ensure the permeability of sinter beds. Conversely, as
shown by many previous studies concerning the binder of raw material for sinter ore, no alternative to burnt lime has yet
been developed and implemented. In this report, the development of a new binder that allows us to realize the intensified
granulation of a raw material, its performance under lab-examination and the test operation of an actual plant are presented.
Lab-examination results showed that the granular index can be improved when dispersant is added compounded together
with micro-particles, and the highest effect on productivity improvement was identified in the pot test. An actual plant test
was also implemented, targeting a reduction in burnt lime, through the improved permeability of sinter beds and with the
intensified granulation of raw materials employing this new binder (micro-particles addition plus dispersant). It was
confirmed that a reduction of approximate 10 kg/t-sinter in burnt lime consumption unit could be achieved as productivity
and sinter ore strength were maintained at an approximately constant level and operation stably secured. Meanwhile, the
granulation index of the compounding raw materials and the permeability before ignition were retained at levels equivalent
to those in the case of the base.
