Earth Science Fr ontiers , 009, 16( ) :347-360 Abstract: In this article, w e review the development of seismic tomo raphy t heory in the past 30 y ears. We an- alyze the exist in problems of this method and propose some w ays to resolve them. Then we summarize and discuss t he research results in China obtained by usin seism ic tomo raphy in t he follow in topics: structure het ero eneity of the crust and mantle; deep structural environment affectin the enerat ion of lar e earth- quakes; deep structure and ori in of active volcanoes; seismic structure of t he oro enic belts and the plate-col- lision zones. T he studies so far indicate that hi h-resolution ima es of the Eart hs interior structure obtained by usin seismic tomo raphy have provided crucial scientific foundation f or improvin our understandin of the e- volut ion of lithosphere, plate motion and interactions, as w ell as deep structural environment that controls the eneration of lar e earthquake and the formation of active volcanoes.
