BMGT 808Y – INFORMATION PROCESSING Instructor: Professor Rosellina Ferraro 3309 Van Munching Hall rferraro@ 301-405-9664 Course Location/Time: Friday 2:00PM – 4:40PM, VMH 2509 Office Hours: by appointment COURSE SYLLABUS Objectives: This course is designed to familiarize you with a wide variety of domains related to consumer information processing. It examines how people process information as a basis for making judgments. Among the topics discussed are memory, how information is integrated with prior knowledge, and limited cognitive resources. The main objective is to provide you with an introduction to selected topics. The course will familiarize you with research in marketing and psychology that will help you to understand how theories and frameworks are developed and tested. Further, it will give you a strong foundation for critical thinking in the area of consumer information processing. We will focus on understanding current theoretical and methodological approaches to various aspects of consumer information processing, as well as advancing this knowledge by developing testable hypotheses and theoretical perspectives that build on the current knowledge base. The course is not intended to provide a comprehensive survey of extant knowledge in consumer information processing, nor does it offer an exhaustive analysis of the particular topics that are covered. Students are encouraged to read additional papers in any area they find exciting. Structure: For each topic considered, a range of articles will be assigned. These articles predominantly come from marketing research journals (i.e., Journal of Consumer Research) but we will also read articles from various psychology journals.
