COURSE DESCRIPTION 1, This course is intended to introduce students to the basic concepts and problems of public international law 2, The course will cover the traditional major topics in this field such as the sources and subjects of international law, the jurisdiction of states, international law and the use of force, and the relationship between international law and the internal law of states. 3, It will also address newer themes in international law such as the international law of human rights and international criminal law. COURSE OBJECTIVE Our goal is to learn about the role and significance of international law in international relations and foreign policy. Additional course-specific objectives include the following: 1. To develop students ability to identify and apply international legal principles relevant to current issues and events in global politics 2. To develop skills in analytical reasoning 3. To improve students ability to write with precision, clarity, and logical coherence TEACHING METHOD combine classroom discussion, videos, and lectures. The goal of the classroom discussion is to promote critical thinking regarding international law and to exchange diverse viewpoints brought into the classroom by students. Accordingly, students must complete the readings prior to class and be prepared to volunteer and be called upon to participate. You are encouraged to read the newspaper and follow international news; each week we will be discussing current events for the first 15 minutes of class.
