This presentation was originally made at the ONR Thermal Management PI Meeting in Berkley CA (on 9-19-2006) Objectives Enhance VTB thermal model library Collaborate with NSWC in developing thermal simulation model of slice-2 of DDG 51, and validate the simulated results. Develop Chiller model in VTB incorporating heat transfer with phase change in the vapor –compression cycle Incorporate Compact cabinet models in VTB Interface compact cabinet models in VTB with multi-objective optimization framework. Schematic of PCM Cooling System Fresh Water- Sea Water Heat Exchanger Number of elements can be changed Governing Eqns for each element: Electrical System Model models can be seamlessly substituted to perform analysis Two different levels of details have been developed for the Electro-thermal model Both models have general focus on electrical system waveform Model 1 The electrical system is represented as a constant power load (the user can specify active and reactive power) The interaction with the thermal system is given by the efficiency coefficient Any loss resulting from the efficiency calculation is supposed to be a forcing function for the thermal system Model 1 Model 2 The model includes the power electronics, the control and the electrical machine The power electronics is modeled through an averaged model Switching and conduction losses are estimated from the averaged model Model 2 Conclusions Developed coupled electrical and thermal modes Developed transient sea-water-fresh-water heat exchange model Developed steady state and transient vapor-compression cycles (2) Developed load connectivity models Incorporated 2-D and 3-D cabinet models and their optimization (MOGA) in VTB Demonstrated effective use of 3-D cabinet model with chiller model Future Work Make the simulation tool more robust Resolve the time step issues Incorporate advanced thermal models Model actual function of IPS Power and Propulsion Simulate Updated Total Ship Thermal Model in V
