Skills building 1: Listening for key words While listening to a lecture or a news report, do you always have to pay attention to every word the speaker uses? When your teacher is speaking, it is important to listen carefully for key words. Key words are the most important words in a sentence or paragraph. Below is some useful information on how to listen for key words. 1 Key words are often stressed. 2 There is often a pause before a key word. 3 Key words are often repeated. 4 Key words are often summarized. Step1 Recognizing key words Part A 1 Listen to the recording and write down the key words. 2 Listen again and complete the table in Part A on page 10. Listen to the recording and write down the key words. Para.4 Para.3 Para.2 Para. 1 author, title, genre, setting plot, characters, character development themes, symbols personal opinion, rate of the story Part A Listening text Teacher: Remember that a literary review is usually written in the simple present tense. In the first paragraph, you should mention the author of the story as well as its title. You should also write what genre, or category, the story belongs to. It is important to mention where the story is set, as this helps put the story in an environment that the reader can understand. So in Paragraph One, you need to mention the author, the title, the genre and where the story is set. In the next paragraph, you should give a summary of the plot. You can also describe the important characters in the story. You should describe any character development which takes place in the story as well. Briefly describe the changes that occur in the characters from the beginning of the story to the end. So in Paragraph Two, you should talk about the plot, characte
