The Culture and Literature of American Lost Generation ABSTRACT Lost generation is a literature genre emerging after the WWI in the US. It is not a well-organized or same creed-holding group. Lost Generation is derived from the words of Gertrude Stein. Once she pointed it to Hemingway: “You are all a lost generation”. So Hemingway used words in his famous work The Sun Also Rises as an epigraph. When the WWI broke out, most authors were the young, who disgusted the war of imperialism, but they could not find the entrance. Under the words of “retrieve world democracy” they went to the European battle, with their ideals. But the reality did not go as they hoped before; all “democracy”, “glory” and “sacrifice” were cheating. They suffered kinds of tribulation during the period of WWI, which lasted non-cured ravage in their hearts forever. They reflected their feeling in the works, such as Three Soldiers by Dos Passos, The Sun Also Rises by Hemingway. The “Lost Generation” boomed in the 1920s, and they inditing trend became to change, including Hemingway. The writers of the Lost Generation created a new style of writing which many generations after tried to imitate. They did away with the florid prose of the 19th century Victorian era and replaced it with a lean, clear prose based on action. Especially, Hemingway employed a technique by which he left out essential information of the story in the belief that omission can sometimes strengthen the plot of the novel.
