宴会，以及如何终生热爱自己团体的其他成员，这些公共性的实践活动促成了国 家与市民社会的互动，推动了社会和文明的进程。共济会中的公共活动培育了市 民社会所要求的市民的文明性，即：追求共同的善的非情绪分析与理性交谈，并 培育出以其获取自由的技能；公众在共济会里获得的文明性使他们也成为国家的 立法者和宪法制订者。市民在共济会的公共活动中所展现的公共性适用于社会秩 序的和谐和国家统治。其意义在于他们用表现出来的优点教给了人们如何把开明 的价值与统治的习惯结合在一起。共济会坚持不懈地把市民社会的思想灌输给人 们，教给人们市民社会的方式和礼仪，使他们变成了市民，而不仅仅是忠于政府 的 “国民”，促成了现代市民社会的形成。所有这些对于推进我国政治体制改革 和民主建设、促进国家政治与市民社会关系的健康发展，无疑具有借鉴意义。 通过对十八世纪英国城市公共性的研究，本文希望把哈贝马斯公共领域理论 与对沙龙、剧院、酒馆、咖啡馆和共济会的历史实证研究相结合，来解读十八世 纪英国的城市文化，展现十八世纪英国城市公共性初步形成的全貌，了解英国如 何以一种和平、渐进、改革的成熟发展方式顺利进入了现代化，推动了英国社会 的发展，使英国率先敲开了现代文明的大门；同时本文更希望通过本文的研究， 可以总结出对我国建设市民社会可资借鉴的经验。 关键词：大众社交，公共性，市民社会 5 Abstract The eighteenth century witnessed the enlightenment movement and social transformation, it was the same case in Britain. The enlightenment movement gave birth to the ideals of liberty, equality and brotherhood, facilitating the development and formation of democratic ideas and modern civil society. As the main achievement of the eighteenth century Enlightenment movement, public sphere exercised the growing importance of the public which justified the democratic politics. Public sphere is an extens ion of the civil rights which also works as the index of city modernity. The industrialization and urbanization makes it possible the separation of the private sphere of the household and the public sphere as well as the separation of daily lives and public affairs. The urban cultural development and expanding arenas of sociability like salons, theaters, taverns and coffee-houses along with the Masonic lodges established a venue where the rising middle classes could meet and engage in discussion through which the public made their opinion known.
